Bollywood Film Website Analysis

For week five of Bollywood company analyses, we will take a closer look into the websites of Viacom 18, Shemaroo Entertainment, and Excel Entertainment. Two family members and a friend participated in my research study of the usability of these particular sites. Each user was asked five questions associated with tasks to complete on the websites, including:

  1. Do you know this company? Can you tell what the company’s product or service is?
  2. Are there reviews on the website? Where can you find them?
  3. Do they list the movie awards they have gotten over time?
  4. Are there any movie clips on the site?
  5. Can you find information on careers or job applications?

Viacom 18

  1. Do you know this company? Can you tell what the company’s product or service is?

Mom: “I have heard you talk about it, they’re Indian movies.”

Cousin: “Yes! I know the company, it’s the Bollywood film company that made some great movies!”

Friend: “No, do not know the company, what is it?” After scrolling down the homepage, she noticed, “It looks kind of like a multimedia company, they have broadcast, digital, movies, and other things.”

2. Are there reviews on the website? Where can you find them?

After clicking through several pages of the website, each of them had no luck in finding any reviews for the content.

3. Do they list the movie awards they have gotten over time?

Each person had some difficulty finding the page with awards, the shortest time being thirty seconds, the longest being a minute.

4. Are there any movie clips on the site?

All participants noticed on the same page as the film awards, there were clips from some of the more prominent work done by Viacom 18 Studios. However, upon clicking next to see all videos in the carousel, they noticed that it was only songs from three films, specifically.

5. Can you find information on careers or job applications?

Mom, friend, and cousin agreed that the careers section was the easiest to find as it is labeled in the tab “Work with Us.” As they clicked onto the section, they noticed the depth of information on the site for a potential employee and intern, which was easy to access.

Shemaroo

  1. Do you know this company? Can you tell what the company’s product or service is?

Mom: “I think the logo used to show on movies a long time ago, but it wasn’t this colorful before.”

Cousin: “They used to make movies right? Do they still? I don’t see their logo before movies anymore.”

Friend: First, she scrolled down the page, then concluded “It seems like they create content, but what kind? There’s some movie titles I recognize, but do they even make movies anymore?”

2. Are there reviews on the website? Where can you find them?

All users clicked through different parts of the website and did not find any reviews on any of the pages.

3. Do they list the movie awards they have gotten over time?

Each user took their own time to search through the website for a list of movie awards, the shortest search time was ten seconds, while the longest was two minutes. Cousin took the shortest amount of time to find the awards on the about page as it was intuitive to find awards there. Mom took the longest at two minutes, but explored sections like our legacy and our business as they could very well be located there as well. Friend was at a midpoint of 45 seconds, she clicked through a couple other sections, skimmed, then located awards in the about section. In conclusion, all participants realized that the awards were not film awards, but company awards for marketing, brand, and campaigns.

4. Are there any movie clips on the site?

After spending much time looking through each section of the websites for an approximate timing of two to five minutes, all users concluded that there were no clips.

5. Can you find information on careers or job applications?

The research participants were able to locate the careers section with ease and were able to read through job benefits and open positions.

Excel Entertainment

  1. Do you know this company? Can you tell what the company’s product or service is?

Mom: “Well, I can already see they make films on the website, it says it right there.”

Cousin: “That’s Farhan’s film production company.”

Friend: “Oh this is easy, it says films here so that’s it.”

2. Are there reviews on the website? Where can you find them?

The participants clicked straight to the films section to check for reviews, but there were none. Then, they clicked through the Excel Media and News sections, still no reviews.

3. Do they list the movie awards they have gotten over time?

Users went straight to the about section to check for the movie awards and there were no listing of awards throughout the website.

4. Are there any movie clips on the site?

All participants went back to the films sections and when they went to click on a movie title, there was a clip that automatically played. A couple participants lingered on the clips longer than others.

5. Can you find information on careers or job applications?

The three users went onto the contact section only to find no job openings or career information. There were only business partnership contact information, story submissions, and a general inquiry section.
